Overview

We are seeking a highly organised and motivated Radiation Protection Consultant who will be required to support the customer Nuclear Radiation Protection Team Lead and other senior team members in providing technical solutions for projects, including:

  • Supporting the radiation protection team in the delivery of work across relevant PP&E projects, under the supervision of senior team members.
  • Helping to ensure that radiation protection issues are identified across projects and that consistent approaches are adopted, and timely support provided to all relevant project stakeholders.
  • Collaborating and working with the rest of the radiation protection team, and interfacing with a broad range of internal teams, such as mechanical, civil and process engineers, nuclear safety, human factors and waste management case specialists to ensure that facility radiological risks on projects are managed to ALARP.
  • Producing a range of technical documentation.

Supporting the work of graduate trainees to enhance their radiation protection knowledge and skills.

Responsibilities

The following below is a representative but not exhaustive list of the requirements for this role with priorities on each changing as required.

 

Day-to-day, you'll act as a technical expert for Radiation Protection on major customer projects, spending some time on thier site(s). (2-3 days a week on-site)

  • General Responsibilities and Accountabilities

    • Supporting the customer Nuclear PP&E Team and other radiation protection team members to support delivery of radiation protection advice to multi-disciplinary teams on major operational and design projects.
    • Delivering high quality work, to schedule.
    • Producing and co-ordinating the production of radiological protection documentation such as Normal Dose Uptake Assessments, Radiological Zoning, Radiological Risk Assessments, ALARP Assessments, Operating Instructions and compliance statements.
    • Providing competent guidance and advice on radiological safety to ensure legislative compliance and adoption of industry best practice.
    • Working closely with other specialist teams, such as Safety Case and Human Factors to ensure a joined-up approach to the application and demonstration of ALARP.
    • Ensuring that company processes and procedures are correctly applied to all technical activities.
    • Maintaining and expanding knowledge of radiological best practices and UK legislation on RP matters.

     

    Project Delivery Responsibilities and Accountabilities

    • Supporting the work of graduate trainees to enhance their radiation protection knowledge and skills.
    • Managing delivery of allocated tasks against cost and programme.
    • Supporting technical submissions through the company’s review and approval process.
    • Ensuring that adequate review, verification and approval is undertaken on all their deliverables and for those under their direct control and supervision.
    • Feeding back lessons learnt for use on future stages of the current project and other projects.

Qualifications

  • A degree in a Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) subject or equivalent industrial experience
  • RPA 2000 Certified Radiation Protection Advisor is essential.

Essential skills

  • Proven experience working with a radiation protection role.
  • Clear ability to lead technical teams.
  • Experience Interfacing with safety case teams and other technical diciplines.
  • Minimum of two years’ experience in a radiation protection role.
  • Good understanding of the Ionising Radiations Regulation 2017 and Associated Code of Practice.
  • Willingness and ability to obtain Security Clearance (SC) and Developed Vetting (DV) clearance if required.

Desired skills

    • Experience designing new processes and facilities.
    • A current holder of at least SC clearance with willingness and ability to obtain Developed Vetting (DV) clearance if required.
    • Good communication skills appropriate for client facing interactions as well as interactions with colleagues of various levels and disciplines.
    • Strong written communication skills with the ability to produce technical documents.
    • Some knowledge and/or experience of working with nuclear site licence compliance arrangements.
    • Some knowledge and understanding of ONR Safety Assessment Principles.
    • Some knowledge of other relevant legislation such as, the Radiation (Emergency Preparedness and Public Information) Regulations 2019, the Environmental Permitting Regulations 2016, Environmental Authorisations (Scotland) Regulations 2018, and IAEA SSR-6 and associated transport legislation.
    • Some understanding of key risks during the design stages, operation and decommissioning phases and mitigations.

What do I need before I apply

    • The candidate must already hold or be willing and able to obtain necessary security clearances, potentially up to and including Developed Vetting clearance.
    • The customer supports a range of clients, applicant must be willing and able to work on both civil and UK defence projects.
