Overview

We are seeking a highly organised and motivated Configuration Management Engineer to join our proactive and innovative team.

 

This role ensures configuration information is clear, concise and valid for the project throughout the project lifecycle ensuring alignment of requirements, technical information and item realisation.

 

Configuration Management is a role discipline which focusses on designing, implementing and monitoring configuration management systems and processes to establish and maintain consistency and accuracy of a product’s or service’s performance, functional, and physical attributes against its requirements, design and operational information.

 

 

Responsibilities

  • Plans and implements Configuration Management (CM) requirements and processes for a specific project in accordance with company and programme quality management systems and company and programme information systems to satisfy contract and programme requirements and project delivery timescales.

    Applies Engineering concepts and theories to deliver the development of designs, calculations and technical solutions for Babcock products
    and services across the Engineering Product Lifecycle. Works independently with occasional supervision, seeking guidance for complex situations.

     
  • Configuration Management functions including product change management, planning, identification, status account and verification.
  • The role requires the engineer to provide support to both existing and future development programmes along with the configuration management (CM) requirements, including but not limited to:
  • Creates, maintains and implements the Project CM Plan in accordance with programme and contractual requirements.
  • Establishes, maintains and manages a CM estimate.
  • Ensures CM activities and deliverables are scheduled and reports progress of planned versus actual.
  • Identifies, recruits and manages Project CM resources.
  • Performs CM team task delegation, prioritisation and performance management.
  • Deploys and ensures usage of the CM tools on the Project.
  • Specifies and maintains supply chain CM requirements.
  • Assesses and audits the supply chain to ensure CM processes, information systems and deliverables meet requirements.
  • Implements and manages technical queries, enterprise change requests, enterprise change notes, enterprise change proposals, concessions, works authorisations and build intent/actual processes.
  • Establishes and manages the project technical and configuration review boards (TRB & CRB) including the establishment of external review boards.
  • Responsible for the establishment and maintenance of Project system configuration baselines (Functional FBL, Allocated ABL, Product PBL)
  • Leads the selection of configuration items using defined criteria and identifies items/documents to be controlled.
  • Ensures the System, Hardware and Software technical requirements and design are captured, controlled and released throughout the system, sub system and end item lifecycles including lab/test models ensuring alignment and consistency.
  • Participates in final design phase reviews and intermediate reviews as appropriate.
  • Manages the provision of build intent configuration information ensuring uniqueness of configurations and providing the ability to track instances of the configuration whilst keeping the build intent clear, concise and valid using the change process.
  • Manages the capture, verification and control of ‘as built’, ‘as installed’, ‘as tested’, ‘as maintained’ and ‘as commissioned’ configuration information.
  • Establishes, maintains and reports the configuration status accounting (CSA) to track technical requirements and design evolution and implementation, ensuring the change process is traceable throughout technical requirements, design and implementation.
  • Plans and supports configuration audits (physical configuration audit (PCA) & functional configuration audit (FCA) for the Project and supply chain.
  • Supports CM process audits conducted on the Project.
  • Supports the Organisation Configuration Manager to implement CM improvements and manage CM resources for the Project.

Qualifications

  • BEng or equivalent in relevant engineering discipline
  • Fully Conversant with Systems Engineering and System/Product Lifecycles.
  • Six Sigma qualification or similar business improvement qualification/trained.
  • Fully Conversant with Product Quality Assurance principles.
  • Educated to Degree or HND/HNC level.
  • Management qualification/trained.
  •  

Essential skills

  • In depth understanding and proven application of CM Standards (e.g., Def Stan 05-57, Def Stan 05-61, EIA-649, ISO10007 and IPx CMII).

    Able to demonstrate knowledge and experience of performing and managing CM processes throughout the full product/system lifecycle within a similar environment.

    Knowledge and experience of managing supply chain CM interfaces. 
  • Meticulous attention to detail.
  • Demonstrate a good level of technical problem solving skills
  • Demonstrate an understanding and awareness of the importance of safety within the industry.
  • Ability to act under own initiative in relation to the assigned tasks within defined functional procedures / governance
  • Ability to describe technical information of a technical task to a wide audience within the engineering business
  • Ability to hold technical discussions with customers and suppliers as required
  • Proven experience in Holistic Life Cycle Management with balanced competencies across the SE Discipline

  • Experience: 5+ years’ experience in system engineering activities and proven experience with supporting customers’ requirements.
  • Technical/Specialized knowledge: With technical programmes of work.
  • Relevant engineering/systems engineering experience ISO 15228 or similar
  • Experience of a range of delivery methods (waterfall, lean, agile, DevOps, etc.)

  • Practitioner in Determining and Managing Stakeholder Requirements, Life Cycle Tailoring, Verification, Validation and Transition to Operation.
  • A good understanding of cross domain and cross boundary requirements and interface.

Desired skills

  • Be conversant and experienced in the use and implementation of CM tools (prefer Siemens Teamcenter) for managing Product Data, Asset Data, Requirements, Documents, Drawings and CAD systems.

    Experience of managing a small team of people to successfully achieve CM delivery milestones in a timely and accurate manner.

    Worked within a highly regulated/licenced nuclear environment.
  • Member of the Institute of Process Excellence or similar.

Experience

  • Significant configuration management experience, worked in complex multiple discipline large scale projects across the full technical lifecycle.
  • Experience in the Nuclear industry
  • Experience in the Civil Engineering industry
  • Experience in both hardware and software engineering lifecycles.
