Overview

Expleo is a leading Global Engineering Services Provider with UK presence in 10 locations. We are seeking an experienced Electrical/Electronics Engineer to work with our client, hybrid attendance at Templecombe.  In this role the successful candidate will undertake electrical and electronic engineering tasks associated with the specification, design, prototyping, development, test and integration of interconnected H/W products (client proprietary building blocks or external COTS) and bespoke electrical / electronic sub-assemblies into 19” racks / cabinets / card-frames. Typical products will include high speed processing, storage, networking, security, data comms, LV power supply, switching and distribution.  These integrated H/W products must be suitably certified in accordance with EU and UK regulations for installation into the environments expected to be found inside submarines/surface ships

 

We are looking for an energetic and driven individual with broad expertise, however of particular interest would be candidates with marine, aerospace or military experience.

Responsibilities

 

The Electrical/Electronics Engineer will perform, but not be limited to the following type of activities centred on the development and delivery of 19” rack mounted interconnected H/W products for installation in/on submarines/surface ships:

  • Deliver against HW requirements through design, development, and test activities.
  • Implement hardware architecture in physical and electrical form, ensuring correct fit and function.
  • Support manufacturing and procurement during build phases by resolving Problem Reports and implementing Engineering Change Requests.
  • Define and execute Hardware Test Specifications and Design Proving procedures during qualification.
  • Define and conduct EMC and Environmental Test Specifications.
  • Design and develop special test equipment as required.
  • Attend and manage off-site qualification testing (e.g., EMC, vibration, temperature).
  • Ensure compliance with requirements through V&V evidence (e.g., DOORS, IADT techniques).
  • Provide specialist knowledge in:
    • CE / UKCA marking
    • LV Directive compliance
    • EMC & environmental certification
    • RoHS & REACH compliance
  • Provide integration, installation, acceptance, and trial support

Qualifications

  • Degree level qualification in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or related discipline.  A lower qualification would be acceptable for example HNC/HND should the candidate be able to demonstrate significant demonstrable experience in lieu

Essential skills

  • Strong foundation in Electronic & Electrical Engineering.
  • COTS AC and DC LV power supply design and integration.
  • Circuit design: PCI, RS232/485, Ethernet, Hotlink.
  • Bespoke digital and analogue circuit design, simulation, debug, and testing.
  • Power electronics design (>60V).
  • High-speed signal transmission, impedance matching, LVDS, serial communication integrity.
  • PCB layout specification.
  • Circuit-level interfaces (I2C, SPI, I2S).
  • Interfacing LVPECL, VML, CML, LVDS/M-LVDS logic levels.
  • Analogue/Digital audio design and mixed-signal circuits.
  • DDRx memory integration.
  • Embedded microcontroller design.
  • Cable/harness design using military-grade connectors (e.g., MIL-DTL-38999).
  • Cable screening & military-style cable construction.
  • Designing to EMC/environmental standards.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Take responsibility for deliverables against cost and schedule.

Desired skills

  • Allegro Design Entry HDL (Cadence).
  • Networking design and COTS network hardware integration.
  • Firmware design (HDL, VHDL, OpenCL).
  • Environmental & regulatory testing (shock, vibration, HALT).
  • Reliability design (MTBF, FIT, MTTR, MTTF).
  • Interconnect design tools (Zuken E3, Formboard).
  • Harsh environment product design.
  • DFx principles.
  • Automated Test Equipment, JTAG, BIT/BITE circuits.
  • Familiarity with RS-232/422/485, industrial/automation interfaces.
  • Circuit protection methods.
  • Programming/scripting (C, C++, Python, Perl, TCL/TKL, Bash).
  • Tools: PLM, DOORS, JIRA, LabView.

Experience

  • Essential Experience:
    • Significant hands-on experience in electrical/electronic design for regulated industries.
    • Strong relevant experience of the Skills listed above or associated experience that can be applied to electronic, electrical and electro-mechanical design in a regulated industry.
    • Design and specification of COTS and bespoke sub-assemblies and equipment suitable for 19” racks / cabinets
    • Interconnection Design (i.e. wiring harnesses, copper (electrical) / fibre (optical) network interconnections, connector types, power distribution and data comms, spatial constraints, environmental considerations).
    • Integration of COTS and bespoke equipment sub-assemblies into 19” racks and cabinets.
    • Working with mechanical engineers to realise electrical designs in 3D mechanical space.
    • Full engineering lifecycle experience (Capture, Design, Implementation, Test).
    • Experience of producing electrical designs and certifying designs to comply with the LV Directive.
    • Experience of selecting and designing products and materials compliant with RoHS and REACH Directives.
    • Experience of producing Technical Files and certification to meet CE / UKCA marking requirements.
    • Working with requirements in a structured and evidential manner.
    • Production of Design / Test Specifications and Test Reports.
    • Knowledge of EU Directives.
  • Desirable Experience:
    • Understanding of Naval platforms, standards and equipment practices.
    • IEC 60297 (Mechanical structures for electronic equipment in harsh environments).
    • DEF STAN 08-107 (General Requirements for the Design of Electrotechnical and Naval Weapon Equipment).
    • DEF STAN 59-411 (EMC)
    • Designing with mechanical and solid-state relays
    • An understanding of the relevant IPC specifications
    • Implementing IP networks / COTS network hardware
    • Thermal analysis techniques
