Expleo is a trusted partner for end-to-end, integrated engineering, quality services and management consulting for digital transformation.  We help businesses harness unrelenting technological change to successfully deliver innovations that will help them gain a competitive advantage and improve the everyday lives of people around the globe.

Expleo are supporting the UK's commitment to maintaining and enhancing its capabilities to address modern threats and challenges in the maritime and aerospace domains.

You will provide our customer with Integrated Logistic Support (ILS) expertise with a primary focus on obsolescence management for mission systems across their lifecycle.

You’ll ensure that system supportability, availability and affordability are maintained through proactive identification, assessment, and mitigation of obsolescence risks—delivering sustainable through-life support solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Obsolescence Management
    • Develop, implement, and maintain Obsolescence Management Plans (OMP) in line with MOD DEF STAN 00-600, BS EN IEC 62402, and Babcock internal policies.
    • Identify and assess risks of component, material, or technology obsolescence across hardware, software, and documentation baselines.
    • Maintain and monitor obsolescence databases and tools (e.g. BOM obsolescence monitoring, DMSMS analysis).
    • Liaise with suppliers, OEMs, and design authorities to gather component data, End-of-Life notifications, and mitigation options.
    • Conduct Obsolescence Risk Assessments and support prioritisation of mitigation actions based on criticality, availability, and cost impact.
    • Generate obsolescence reports, dashboards, and KPIs for internal and customer review boards.
    • Develop and evaluate mitigation strategies: last-time-buy, redesign, emulation, substitution, or technology insertion.
    • Support the development of long-term Through-Life Support Strategies and ensure that obsolescence costs and risks are accurately represented in project risk registers and cost models.
    • Represent Babcock in customer and supplier Obsolescence Working Groups, providing technical advice and maintaining compliance with MOD and customer expectations.
    • Support contract deliverables such as Obsolescence Status Reports (OSR), risk registers, and Configuration Item (CI) updates.
  • Integrated Logistic Support
    • Contribute to the development and maintenance of the Integrated Logistic Support Plan (ILSP) and other element plans (maintenance, spares, training, support equipment).
    • Support Supportability Analysis, including Reliability, Availability, and Maintainability (RAM) assessments.
    • Assist with the definition of maintenance regimes and support solutions that minimise downtime and lifecycle costs.
    • Contribute to bid and proposal activities by providing ILS and obsolescence input to cost models, risk analyses, and schedules.
    • Ensure integration between ILS, Systems Engineering, Supply Chain, and Project Management disciplines.
    • Provide technical inputs to Life-Cycle Costing (LCC) and Through-Life Cost (TLC) models, incorporating obsolescence risk and mitigation cost impacts.
    • Ensure compliance with relevant standards (e.g. DEF STAN 00-600, JSP 886/101/945, ISO 15288) and Babcock engineering processes.

Qualifications

  • HNC/HND or degree in Engineering, Systems, or related technical discipline.

Essential skills

  • Understanding of reliability and maintainability principles, and how obsolescence influences availability and support cost.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret data, identify trends, and communicate technical findings effectively.
  • Excellent stakeholder management — able to work with design authorities, OEMs, suppliers, and MOD customers.
  • Competent in producing detailed, high-quality documentation (plans, reports, analyses).

Experience

  • Proven experience in ILS / IPS engineering within defence, aerospace, or complex systems environment.
  • Demonstrated experience managing component and technology obsolescence in a systems or platform context.
  • Familiarity with obsolescence management standards (IEC 62402, DEF STAN 00-600) and associated processes.
  • Experience using obsolescence monitoring tools or databases (e.g. SiliconExpert, IHS, or equivalent).
