Overview

Expleo is a trusted partner for engineering, quality services, and digital transformation. We collaborate with world-leading aerospace manufacturers, delivering cutting-edge solutions in aircraft systems development, certification support, and programme management. We foster innovation, technical excellence, and professional growth, empowering our teams to shape the future of aerospace engineering.

We are seeking an experienced Landing Gear Systems Engineer to support our clients aircraft programme. In this role, you will lead and contribute to two critical work packages: the development of the Nose Wheel Steering (NWS) Electronic Control Unit and the Brake Control System (BCS). You will ensure that both systems are designed, documented, and validated to meet all regulatory and programme requirements. This position demands a combination of technical expertise in aircraft mechanical/electrical systems and strong oversight of compliance activities. The successful candidate will act as a key interface between the aircraft design team and system suppliers, guiding the engineering process from specification through certification for these vital landing gear systems.

Responsibilities

  • Provide mechanical and electrical systems expertise for ATA 32 (Landing Gear) systems, focusing on the Nose Wheel Steering ECU and the Brake Control System on the Aircraft
  • Develop, review, and approve design and compliance documentation for NWS and BCS, including technical specifications, design drawings, analysis reports, test plans, and compliance evidence, ensuring all documentation meets regulatory standards (e.g. EASA CS-25) and project requirements.
  • Define and implement the certification strategy for the NWS ECU and BCS. This includes generating and verifying Means of Compliance documentation (such as safety assessments, qualification plans, and verification matrices) to demonstrate that system designs fulfill all certification requirements.
  • Act as the Compliance Verification Engineer for NWS and BCS systems – formally checking and signing off that the design and implementation of these systems comply with airworthiness regulations and the programme’s quality and safety standards.
  • Liaise with equipment suppliers (for both steering and brake systems) on behalf of the aircraft manufacturer, providing technical guidance and oversight. Review and approve supplier deliverables – such as system schematics, interface control documents, test procedures, and analysis results – ensuring they are compliant with the aircraft’s requirements and free of issues that could affect certification.
  • Coordinate requirements and interfaces between the suppliers and the aircraft design team: jointly develop system-level requirements and ensure the supplier’s component-level requirements align with them. Oversee the integration of supplier equipment with other aircraft systems (e.g. mechanical interfaces with landing gear structure, hydraulic and electrical connections, avionics data interfaces) and resolve any integration issues.
  • Contribute to safety and reliability analyses for the landing gear systems. For example, define relevant aircraft-level operating conditions and failure scenarios for the brake control system, and provide necessary data (such as external event probabilities and flight test data) to support the supplier’s safety engineering (fault tree analysis, failure mode effects analysis, etc.). Verify that the overall system safety and performance meet the programme’s objectives.
  • Monitor and manage the progress of the NWS and BCS work packages against programme milestones (e.g. Critical Design Review readiness, test aircraft installation schedules). Prepare and deliver regular status updates and reports, and maintain action item lists to ensure timely completion of tasks.
  • Support configuration management and quality processes: ensure all design changes go through proper change control, all data is managed in the prescribed PLM/PDM systems, and that final deliverables are of high quality (fully traceable, correct, and complete). You will facilitate formal reviews and sign-offs (both internally and with the customer’s engineering and quality representatives) for the NWS and BCS deliverables.
  • Collaborate closely with the client’s engineering teams and internal project managers to address technical issues, mitigate risks, and achieve on-time delivery of the work packages. Attend regular technical and programme meetings (on-site in Munich and remotely), providing expertise and ensuring effective communication between all stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • Degree (BSc/BEng) or HNC/HND (or equivalent) in Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical/Electronic Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Applications are also welcomed from individuals with significant relevant experience in lieu of formal qualifications.

Essential skills

  • Technical Expertise: In-depth knowledge of aircraft systems engineering, particularly in mechanical/hydraulic systems and electronic control units. Able to understand and influence detailed design aspects of landing gear and brake control systems.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Strong understanding of aviation regulatory requirements and standards. Able to interpret and apply EASA certification specifications (CS-25) and ensure compliance through appropriate means of compliance and engineering practices.
  • Documentation & Analytical Skills: Excellent ability to produce, review, and critique technical documentation – including specifications, engineering drawings, test plans, analyses, and reports. Meticulous attention to detail and a methodical approach to verifying compliance evidence and design data.
  • Tools Proficiency: Proficiency with engineering tools and software. For example, experience with CAD/PDM systems (such as CATIA and 3DExperience), requirements management tools (e.g. IBM DOORS), and standard office and data analysis applications. Ability to quickly learn and use project-specific tools and follow prescribed processes (for configuration management, change tracking, etc.).
  • Communication & Collaboration: Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. Capable of conveying complex technical information clearly to diverse stakeholders (design engineers, Quality Assurance, suppliers, managers, certification authorities). Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to lead discussions, negotiate technical points with suppliers, and foster a collaborative working environment across different organisations.
  • Problem-Solving & Organisation: Effective at troubleshooting issues and driving them to resolution. Well-organised, able to manage multiple tasks and priorities in parallel, and adept at coordinating cross-functional efforts to meet deadlines.

Desired skills

  • EASA Part 21J Design Organisation Experience: Previous appointment as a Compliance Verification Engineer (CVE) or similar signatory within an EASA-approved design organisation is a distinct advantage.
  • Domain-Specific Knowledge: Experience with nose wheel steering systems, brake-by-wire systems, or anti-skid braking systems in aircraft will help you hit the ground running.
  • Safety and Reliability Analysis: Knowledge of system safety and reliability tools/methodologies (e.g. fault tree analysis, FMEA/FMECA, reliability workbench software) as applied to aircraft systems. A
  • Personal Attributes: We value individuals who are not only technically skilled but also excel in teamwork and adaptability. You should be someone for whom collaboration and working in partnership comes naturally – a confident communicator who can negotiate effectively and build positive relationships.
  • Finally, you are resilient and adaptable, comfortable navigating ambiguity and complexity, and you help your team members to stay focused and deliver results.

Experience

  • Proven experience in aerospace engineering, specifically in aircraft systems development and certification. You should have a strong track record (typically 5+ years) of working on aircraft systems integration projects or compliance verification activities.
  • Familiarity with aircraft landing gear, hydraulic and brake systems (ATA 32) is highly desirable – for example, experience with brake control units, steering actuators, or similar systems on civil aircraft.
  • Hands-on experience with the certification process for aircraft systems, including knowledge of EASA certification standards (e.g. CS-25) and development assurance guidelines (such as ARP4754A). Experience preparing or reviewing compliance documents, test evidence, and certification reports is essential.
  • Experience in working closely with suppliers or external partners in an aerospace project. This includes overseeing supplier deliverables, managing technical interfaces, or acting as a technical liaison on behalf of an aircraft manufacturer or integrator.
