Overview

We are seeking a Business Unit Director to lead and grow a strategically critical nuclear business unit within Expleo’s UK operation. This role combines front‑end market leadership and business winning with full accountability for operational delivery, financial performance and team leadership.

This is not a pure sales role — and not a delivery‑only leadership position. You will own the full lifecycle: shaping market strategy, winning complex work, building trusted client partnerships, and ensuring programmes are delivered safely, profitably and to the highest nuclear standards.

You will operate as a senior leader within the nuclear leadership community, responsible for translating market opportunity into a scalable, high‑performing business unit with strong culture, capability depth and repeatable growth.

The Role

As Business Unit Director, you hold end‑to‑end accountability for a defined nuclear portfolio, including:

  • Business growth and market positioning
  • Winning and securing major programmes and frameworks
  • Operational delivery performance and client outcomes
  • Financial results (revenue, margin, cost and risk)
  • Leadership, development and engagement of multidisciplinary teams

You will work closely with executive leadership, delivery leaders, engineering authorities and commercial teams to ensure Expleo is positioned as a long‑term strategic partner across the UK nuclear landscape.

This is a high‑impact leadership role requiring credibility at board, programme and regulatory levels, and the ability to balance commercial ambition with nuclear safety, quality and delivery integrity.

Responsibilities

Business Unit Leadership & Strategy

  • Own and lead a defined nuclear business unit with full P&L accountability
  • Develop and execute a clear business unit strategy aligned to UK nuclear market priorities and Expleo’s wider growth objectives
  • Set growth targets, delivery plans and capability roadmaps to support sustainable scale
  • Act as a visible senior leader internally and externally, representing Expleo across the nuclear ecosystem

Business Winning & Market Growth

  • Lead major business winning activity, from early client engagement through to contract award
  • Shape and approve win strategies, bid priorities, partner models and commercial approaches
  • Secure and grow positions on:
    • Nuclear frameworks and alliances
    • Long‑term service agreements
    • Multi‑year engineering, safety and consultancy programmes
  • Maintain a deep understanding of:
    • Client investment plans
    • Procurement strategies
    • Regulatory and funding drivers
  • Build a robust, forward‑looking pipeline aligned to long‑term nuclear programmes

Operational Delivery & Performance

  • Hold ultimate accountability for the successful delivery of all work within the business unit
  • Ensure programmes are delivered:
    • Safely
    • On time
    • To quality standards
    • Within agreed commercial parameters
  • Work closely with delivery and technical leaders to ensure:
    • Appropriate resourcing and capability
    • Strong governance and risk management
    • Continuous improvement in delivery performance
  • Act as senior escalation point for delivery, commercial or client issues

Client & Stakeholder Leadership

  • Own senior‑level relationships with:
    • Nuclear site licensees
    • Tier 1 EPCs and integrators
    • Framework and alliance leads
    • Government bodies and regulators (where appropriate)
  • Position Expleo as a trusted delivery and advisory partner, not a transactional supplier
  • Ensure high levels of client satisfaction, repeat business and long‑term account growth

People & Capability Leadership

  • Lead, mentor and develop senior managers, account leads and delivery leaders within the business unit
  • Build a high‑performing, engaged and safety‑led culture
  • Identify capability gaps and support recruitment, succession planning and skills development
  • Promote collaboration across engineering, safety, consultancy and delivery disciplines

Essential skills

  • Demonstrable success in:
    • Winning and growing major nuclear programmes
    • Leading complex delivery organisations
    • Managing P&L and commercial risk
  • Strong understanding of:
    • UK nuclear governance and regulation
    • Nuclear procurement and contracting models
    • Safety, quality and assurance expectation
  • Credibility & Leadership:

    • Established senior‑level network across the UK nuclear ecosystem
    • Ability to engage credibly with executive, commercial and technical decision‑makers
    • Seen as a leader who balances commercial drive with delivery excellence and nuclear integrity
    • Confident operating in complex, regulated and politically sensitive environments

Desired skills

  • Strategic, commercially astute and delivery‑focused
  • Strong influencer and decision‑maker
  • Resilient, accountable and comfortable with ambiguity
  • Values‑led, with a clear commitment to safety and people development

Experience

  • Proven experience operating at Business Unit Director, Account Director or equivalent senior leadership level within the UK nuclear sector
