As a Systems Safety Engineer, you will be a crucial member of our team, contributing to the safety and reliability of our state-of-the-art missile systems.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to ensure the safety and reliability of missile systems throughout the entire development lifecycle.
  • Conduct hazard analysis, risk assessments, and safety assessments to identify potential hazards and risks associated with the missile systems and their components.
  • Define and implement safety requirements, standards, and guidelines in compliance with industry regulations and customer specifications.
  • Work closely with design and development teams to integrate safety considerations into system architecture, design, and operational concepts.
  • Perform safety analysis for complex systems, including; functional hazard assessments (FHAs), fault tree analysis (FTA), failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA), common cause analysis, Hazard Analysis, Hazard Identification, Foundation Safety Reviews, Hazard Log Management (using DOORS), Safety Compliance Matrix, Mitigation Strategies and Safety Case Reports.
  • Support the development of safety cases and safety documentation, providing clear and concise safety arguments and evidence to demonstrate compliance with safety standards.
  • Participate in safety review boards and present safety assessments to stakeholders, customers, and regulatory authorities.
  • Monitor safety-related issues and incidents, lead investigations when required, and propose corrective actions to prevent reoccurrence.
  • Stay up to date with industry best practices, safety standards, and regulations related to defense and missile systems.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives in systems safety engineering processes and methodologies.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or master’s degree in engineering (e.g., Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering) or a related technical field.

Essential skills

  • Proven experience as a Systems Safety Engineer in the defense, aerospace, or a safety-critical industry.
  • Familiarity with safety standards and regulations, such as MIL-STD-882, DEF STAN 00-056, and/or DO-178C.
  • Strong understanding of safety analysis techniques and methodologies, including FTA, FMEA, FHA, and system-level safety assessments.
  • Experience with safety-related tools and software applications used in safety engineering.
  • Knowledge of systems engineering principles, requirements management, and systems integration.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Effective communication and teamwork abilities, with the capacity to work across multidisciplinary teams.

Desired skills

  • Familiarity with missile systems or other complex weapon systems.
  • Experience with safety assessment of software-intensive systems.
  • Knowledge of functional safety standards such as ISO 26262 or IEC 61508

Experience

  • Experience of facilitating/undertaking Hazard Identification and Assessment exercises using some or all of the following:
    • Hazard and Operability Studies (HazOpS);
    • Fault Tree Analysis;
    • Event Tree Analysis;
