As part of our continued support to a major automotive client, we are seeking a highly skilled Project Design Engineer – Powertrain to support the design, development, integration and delivery of Powertrain Systems and associated hardware across automotive programmes.

 

The role will focus on Powertrain Systems and High Voltage (HV) hardware, including Thermal/Cooling, HVAC, fuel systems, pipework, cable routing, brackets, mountings and isolation components. The successful candidate will coordinate design activities, engineering deliverables, suppliers and technical issues to ensure delivery against technical, package, quality, cost, weight and programme requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and support design reviews and engineering design solutions from concept through to release and vehicle production.
  • Support the technical and hardware delivery of Powertrain Thermal, Cooling, HVAC, fuel and HV systems.
  • Manage engineering changes, design concerns, BOMs and engineering releases, ensuring appropriate tracking and control.
  • Develop and manage component/system timing plans and engineering release schedules against programme and gateway milestones.
  • Support vehicle package and concept reviews, ensuring relevant vehicle, environmental and system inputs are incorporated into designs.
  • Review and manage 3D/2D CAD and engineering drawings, including CATIA V5 models and drawing standards.
  • Support DFM activities, supplier design reviews and CAD/drawing readiness for engineering release.
  • Lead and support supplier liaison, component development, design and release activities.
  • Define and manage DFMEA, DVP and validation activities, including test planning, results and reporting.
  • Manage engineering concerns and QCRs using structured 8D/PPS problem-solving methodologies.
  • Support prototype and production vehicle builds, including lineside engineering support and resolution of build issues.
  • Work collaboratively with cross-functional teams including purchasing, SQA, logistics, manufacturing and attribute teams.
  • Ensure designs meet technical, package, assembly, serviceability, manufacturability, quality, cost and weight requirements.
  • Consider relevant thermal, NVH, durability, emissions and vehicle performance requirements.
  • Chair and contribute to cross-functional technical reviews and project meetings.
  • Prepare and present technical information for internal and external project status reviews.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline (2:1 or above or equivalent).
  • Relevant professional engineering experience may be considered in place of a degree.

Essential skills

  • 5+ years' experience in automotive design/development, preferably within Powertrain or vehicle systems.
  • Strong knowledge of Powertrain component/system design, integration, development and engineering release.
  • Experience with Thermal/Cooling, HVAC, fuel, pipework, HV systems and/or mechanical integration.
  • Experience with 3D/2D CAD, preferably CATIA V5.
  • Good understanding of vehicle packaging, component interfaces and environmental design considerations.
  • Understanding of GD&T and engineering tolerancing.
  • Experience applying DFM/DFMA principles.
  • Experience with engineering change, BOM and release management.
  • Experience with DFMEA, DVP and validation processes.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, including experience with 8D/PPS methodologies.
  • Experience working with suppliers and cross-functional engineering teams.
  • Strong organisational, communication and project-delivery skills.

Desired skills

  • Automotive OEM or Tier 1 engineering experience.
  • Experience with Powertrain Thermal/Cooling or HV systems.
  • CATIA V5 experience for CAD review/development.
  • Knowledge of BS 8888 and engineering drawing standards.
  • Experience managing supplier design and component development.
  • Knowledge of APQP/PPAP and production-readiness processes.
  • Experience supporting prototype and production vehicle builds.
  • Knowledge of automotive materials and manufacturing processes.
  • Experience working with thermal, NVH, durability, emissions or vehicle performance attribute teams.

Experience

  • Minimum 5 years' relevant automotive engineering experience.
  • Experience across concept, design, development, validation and engineering-release phases.
  • Proven ability to manage engineering deliverables, timing plans, BOMs, design changes and technical issues.
  • Demonstrable experience delivering components/systems to defined technical, quality, cost, weight and timing targets.
  • Experience coordinating activities across multidisciplinary engineering teams and external suppliers.
  • Proven ability to resolve engineering issues and deliver robust solutions within programme timescales.
